Rising Dovetail / Kid’s French Workbench

I decided a few months back that I was going to learn how to cut a rising dovetail. However, in my typical fasion, I had to incorperate the learning process into a full fledged IMG_5910project.  So when you couple the inspiration of learning the joint from a well known episode of The Woodwright’s Shop featuring the French Workbench and me being tired of pulling screws and nails my my own workbench, it was time to build one for my oldest.

So off to youtube I went. I watched Roy Underhill do it over and over again, but I did wonder if there were any other takes on it. That’s when I came across Mitch Peacocks video on cutting the joint. It turned out to be an excellent video. After watching a few times I decided to take some notes of the ‘process’ to take to the shop and put to use.IMG_5915

Now beleive it or not – this makes sense to me… But maybe not you… However, in my quest to learn and share my journey in woodworking, I took some of my free time while away from the shop to design a ‘better’ workinRising Dovetailg instruction. I wont’t blow smoke but I am fairly pleased with how it turned out. I sent the first version to Gerry, the woodworking
half of Tanger Artworks, for testing, he made a few recommendations and sent it back. A few corrections later and this version is now available. (By all means – Any further recommendations will be appreciated!)

Side note! Here’s a couple new tools that came for me for Christmas: A Paul Sellers inspired Frame Saw and a  Scratch Stock modeled after the one offered from Lee Valley. Can’t wait to put them to use!

THANKS GERRY!
